Born out of their Grammy Award-winning performance together in the movie Once, Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova formed the group The Swell Season. Their second album “Strict Joy” was released to critical acclaim in October of last year and the duo plans to tour the United States this summer with their band. Hansard and Irglova’s voices complement each other perfectly. Irglova’s delicate, beautiful voice blends with Hansard’s intense, emotional vocals. The Swell Season will play a number festivals and shows in Canada and the United States in July and August. They’re currently finishing the month of May with three shows in Atlanta, Louisville, and Cleveland. Check out the couple’s performance of “I Have Loved You Wrong” in Baltimore, MD at Meyerhoff Symphony Hall to get an idea of the power behind The Swell Season.

Though he’s nearing the ripe age of 70, Ringo Starr is still making great music. Ringo’s 15th studio album, Y Not, is being called by some his best since 1973’s Ringo. The former Beatles drummer will be on tour this summer with his All Star Band for their 11th headlining tour. You should act fast if you want to get Ringo Starr tickets as it isn’t every day you get to see such a historic artist live. Starr had help from friends like Paul McCartney, Joss Stone, and Joe Walsh on Y Not, making an album. One of the highlights include the serene track “Peace Dream” where Starr writes about John Lennon’s hopes and dreams in a beautiful ballad. Y Not is a straightforward Ringo rock ‘n roll album that won’t disappoint.

Chelsea Handler, star of her own E! talk show “Chelsea Lately”, will be heading out on the road on a 21 date stand up tour supporting her new book “Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang”. The pop culture satirist has become successful in multiple media platforms in a short time as a TV host, stand up comedian, best-selling author, and columnist. Chelsea Handler’s 2007 Comedy Central half hour special earned great ratings and the comedian was offered her own show on E! When Chelsea is not making fun of ridiculous celebrities her humor turns on herself making jokes about her life growing up, hectic love life, and her love of Vodka. It’s no coincidence that her upcoming tour is sponsored by her favorite brand of vodka, Belvedere. Chelsea will also be making book store appearances to sign copies of “Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang” and converse with her fans.

The Super Bowl is only a few weeks away. We don’t know who is going to be in the big game yet, but we know a lot more possibilities than we did even a week ago. Wild Card weekend is this weekend, with teams like Dallas, Green Bay, Philly, Cincy, New England and Baltimore in action. But the big teams don’t kick into gear for another week. The Indianapolis Colts and San Diego Chargers appear to be on a collision course in the AFC Championship. And this would be an amazing game, with Rivers doing a great job out in Southern Cal and Manning leading his team to yet another amazing season. In the NFC we’re looking forward to seeing New Orleans in a big game. We’re not sure what to expect out of the Minnesota Vikings yet, however, as they had some trouble down the stretch. It will be a very interesting postseason for all of these teams. Let’s get ready for a big year!

Sting is back on tour for the holidays. He came out with an interesting CD recently which was a bunch of different holiday songs from medieval and Renaissance Britain. It has been received with mixed reviews, but those who are looking for regular rock music will likely be disappointed. But people who enjoy that kind of music or are looking to hear something different will get the chance to do so when you see him in concert. He looks a little bit like a 19th century person in the performance, but the music is absolutely beautiful. You might not have heard some of these songs, because he’s not doing a typical Christmas show. In other words, there isn’t much reindeer and Santa. Instead, it’s a bit more serious and he definitely acts the part just right!

If you’re looking for a show to see this holiday season, might I suggest God of Carnage. It is set up as though it’s going to be a dramatic show, with two kids who got into a fight at school. One of them lost a tooth and they both got pretty roughed up. But what starts as parents trying to fix a problem between two young boys turns into a competition between the two sets of parents, both of whom get very angry at one another. What makes the show so interesting is that the two couples are set up to have widely differing personalities and this leads to some fun battles between them. Trust me, it’s a comedy. With the new cast, including Jimmy Smits and Christine Lahti, you are guaranteed an awesome show that will have you laughing hard!

The musical Rent has been done all over the place. In fact, it’s even been performed in high schools across the country in the last couple of years. The newest off-Broadway version in Long Island is still very good. The performers aren’t the same as the original, with the actors in other places, working on other projects. The musical has been one of the biggest successes on Broadway in the last 20 years. For some people, the show seems even more powerful than it was when it debuted in 1996. But for me, it seems more distant. This is partly because the shock of the entire epidemic isn’t there anymore and because it’s become more broadly recognized than it was back then. Hopefully, the musical will continue playing to keep people mindful of the illness. We enjoy the music and the script just as much as we did back then.

Michael Jackson will be buried on August 29th in Glendale, California. This is over two months after he passed away at a hospital in Los Angeles. Why the wait? They had to do an autopsy and needed to do more tests and check up on a lot of other things. It’s also not clear if his doctor at the time had anything to do with his death, perhaps over-prescribing something? It’s a little bit hard to figure it all out, but they’ve been doing the tests. They had a big funeral. All that’s left is to bury him properly, which will happen in just about 10 days. We will have one last chance to honor the musician that changed the world of pop music for good!

The film noir satire called “Kill Me Deadly” is one of the funniest satires to hit the theater scene in quite awhile. And it does it in a way that’s not just zany screaming the whole time. It’s at once subtle and broad at the same time. The main character is well played by Dean Lamont, with the right vocal style and everything from the heroic character in a film noir. The woman counterpart is a combination of Mae West and Liza Minelli (the southern version), where she can go from being selfish to helpless in the space of a sentence or two. This is done very well and makes it both fitting the style but also very funny indeed. The plot, which deals with a cursed ruby that kills a wealthy heiress and turns it into a murder mystery, is like a combination of all the most predictable plots in the genre and surprises everyone with how fine a point it puts on it!

Whenever you think of the top musicals in the world, almost everyone will put Oklahoma somewhere near the top of the list. It has been a popular musical for decades already and people still enjoy it. But one of the strange things about this musical is that there is almost nothing new done with this musical. Everytime it’s just the usual cowpoke kind of characters with silly songs and everything else. But this year in London, they’re trying something new. They’re adding hott aspects of the show. That’s “hott” with two T’s, meaning that they’re getting into the sensual undertones of theshow, with the cowboys and everything. The reviewers didn’t like this show so much, because of some technical and performance problems, but in another way, it’s great to see them trying something new with this older musical and it will remain interesting to see whether they will be able to proceed with other fun stagings of this show.
