Rent Off-Broadway
The musical Rent has been done all over the place. In fact, it’s even been performed in high schools across the country in the last couple of years. The newest off-Broadway version in Long Island is still very good. The performers aren’t the same as the original, with the actors in other places, working on other projects. The musical has been one of the biggest successes on Broadway in the last 20 years. For some people, the show seems even more powerful than it was when it debuted in 1996. But for me, it seems more distant. This is partly because the shock of the entire epidemic isn’t there anymore and because it’s become more broadly recognized than it was back then. Hopefully, the musical will continue playing to keep people mindful of the illness. We enjoy the music and the script just as much as we did back then.
